Why UIET Intends to Use GATE 2015 Scores for PG Admissions

For admission into Master of Engineering (ME) and Master of Technology (M. Tech), UIET has been creating two separate merit lists – one for CET (PG) candidates and the other for those candidates who had qualified the GATE exam. Students who had cleared the GATE exam were exempt from the CET. A final merit list is then drawn up, giving preference to those students who had cleared the GATE exam over the CET candidates. In 2013, only GATE applicants appeared on the final list of students who were offered admission to the institute. UIET director Renu Vig said, “Given that UIET was a relatively new institute, we were getting fewer GATE applications in the initial years. But now, we have more GATE applicants, and since the test is a reputed and well-recognized one, we felt there was no need to continue with the CET.”

Apart from the GATE score, one would need to have an aggregate of 60% in their graduate level courses to secure admission.

How This Development Impacts GATE 2015

As more institutes begin taking GATE scores as one of the criteria for admission into PG courses, an increasing number of students will consider appearing for the GATE exam. GATE 2014 saw almost 9 lakh students taking these competitive exams. Among them, merely 16.84% candidates could qualify. The fight for scoring top ranks in GATE 2015 could turn fiercer. Those opting for GATE coaching – expert guidance, access to specialized study material and practice tests – will have an upper hand.
